Tech Tips:
Hose Kits
When discussing Beadlock and barb fittings, we are referring to the portion of the fitting inserted into the hose.
Barb Type A/C/ Fittings
Barb fittings
The standard of the A/C industry up through the 1990's have three "barbs" that prevent the fitting from backing out of the hose once inserted. Crimping ferrules are not typically attached to these fittings.
Beadlock Type A/C Fitting
Beadlock fittings
The new standard for the A/C industry feature an attached crimping ferrule and three ribs on the portion of the fitting being inserted into the hose. Either Barb or Beadlock fittings can be used for
HFC-134a or R-12 systems. However, it is very important that the fittings be crimped properly.
Barb Fittings require a crimp that encircles the diameter
of the ferrule.
Barb fittings are crimped lengthwise along the hose.


DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CRIMP HOSES WITH ANY TOOL OTHER THAN AN A/C HOSE CRIMPING TOOL. Crimpers for hydraulic hose will provide a crimp similar to a barb style crimp. However, a hydraulic hose crimper will crimp the ferrule too tightly over the hose causing the barrier lining of the hose to split.
This will contribute to loss of refrigerant and possible damage to components.

Tech Tips:
Safety Switch
The safety switch is one of the most important yet most overlooked
portion of the air conditioning system.
The function of the safety switch is to monitor high and low side pressure and shut down the system if the pressure exceeds safe or drops below operating limits.
The binary switch simply splices between the compressor clutch and
evaporator thermostat and taps into the high pressure line.
When pressures exceed safe limits, the switch opens the circuit to the compressor clutch thus disengaging the compressor until pressure return to normal.
The trinary switch operates much the same as the binary in that it shuts down the compressor when pressures rise. However, the trinary also controls an electric fan on the radiator that pulls additional air across the condenser to bring pressures down.
